The origins of St. Valentine’s Day are not fully known. The story most commonly told is connected to a Roman priest named Valentine who lived in the third century. At that time, the Roman emperor Claudius II had decided to ban marriages because he believed that unmarried men made better soldiers. Valentine did not agree with this decision and began marrying couples in secret.
When the emperor discovered this, Valentine was imprisoned. According to the legend, while he was in jail he prayed for the healing of his jailer’s blind daughter, Julia, and her sight was restored. During this time, he also became friends with her. On the day of his execution, the 14th of February, he is said to have left her a letter signed “Your Valentine.”
Over the years, the 14th of February gradually became associated with exchanging love notes, small gifts, and sweet treats.
While there is no certainty that these stories are historically accurate, what is certain is that St. Valentine’s Day is a lovely excuse to prepare and enjoy something sweet. Whether you make it as a surprise for your partner, share it with your family, or to simply treat yourself..
