Lent in Malta is an important part of the religious traditions in the country. Although meat and extra goodness might be off the menu, the lent food is still remarkably comforting. Apart from the never disappointing Maltese ħobż biż-żejt, Maltese cuisine truly shines bright during this season. All of these dishes are passed down through generations, with some even evolving into new inventive dish. They aren’t just dishes but they have become traditions.
In this post, I have gathered a collection of some of the most beloved Maltese classics eaten during Lent. Even if you might not follow the Christian Lent, these dishes are still flavourful and can be enjoyed by everyone.
Sfineġ tal-Inċova – Traditional Maltese Anchovy Fritters
On of the most popular lent foods, sfineġ tal-Inċova are a fluffy yet crunchy Maltese speciality, traditionally eaten during the Lent period, specifically on Good Friday. Basically, they are a fried dough ball with an anchovy on the inside.

Kwareżimal – Maltese Lenten biscuit
Kwareżimal is a traditional Maltese naturally vegan Lenten sweet. An easy to make almond biscuit with a spiced and citrusy aroma, perfect for teatime!

Spinach & Tuna Pies
Warm spinach and tuna pies are a favourite comfort food during lent. Buttery dough filled with an abundant tangy mixture with spinach and tuna.

Qagħqa tal-Appostli – Maltese Apostle’s ring bread
Qagħqa tal-Appostli is a delicious soft bread with a crunchy crust covered with sesame seeds and whole almonds. This bread is made specifically during the Lent period.

Qaqoċċ Mimli bit-Tonn taż-Żejt – Maltese Tuna Stuffed Artichokes
A true classic, Maltese tuna stuffed artichokes (Qaqoċċ mimli bit-tonn taż-żejt). The artichokes are trimmed and filled with a tuna and herb filling for a gorgeous Mediterranean flavour, served with potatoes and fresh parsley. A good meal to serve on Ash Wednesday or Good Friday.

Pulpetti tal-Pastard – Maltese Cauliflower Fritters
A staple Maltese fritter! These pulpetti tal-pastard (cauliflower fritters) are fluffy healthy savoury fritters. They make the perfect lent food.
